Welcome to Our Website!

I
n the mid 1960's, a group of distinguished gentlemen that were close friends came together to create a local social club. These close friends lived in the same general area; two in upper Manhattan and six in Bergen County, New Jersey. The club idea became a reality when three of these men (John L. Greene, Garvall Booker and Whittie English, Jr.) put pen to paper and drafted a constitution.  The document was typed by Whittie English, Jr. and presented to the group for adoption at a formal gathering in the fall of 1967. This gathering hosted Gravall Booker, Julius Brooker, Joseph M. Dargan, Charles P Dilworth, Whittie English, Jr., John L. Greene, Francis A. Hutchins, Eyre Saitch, George Sawyer, and Herman B. Smith. This began the Organization known as The Englewood Social Club.  >>>>>>More

The Englewood Social Club's

Memorial Plaque

Designed in 2003 and exhibited for the first time at The Club’s 2004 Gala, the Englewood Social Club’s Memorial Plaque was designed by Eddie R. Hadden and Gus Jenkins while serving as Chairmen of the Entertainment Committee and President respectively (2002-2004).

The uniquely designed piece of art serves to provide, at a glance the membership history of the organization from it’s beginning to the present. It is so designed that the name plates are all movable. This makes it possible to historically show where every member of the organization is at the present time.

The top row shows the ten founding members from 1967. This part of the plaque can not be altered.

The second section, consisting of three rows, represents the current active membership. The constitution of the organization allows for a maximum of thirty members, therefor only thirty (30) places are required.

The third section is the clubs Alumni. Once a member retires from active status, his name is retired reverently to his place in history in the section of the plaque.

You will note that each active member is represented on the board by his picture and a name plate. The order of appearance is the order in which the member joined the club (From left to right & top to bottom). As new members join the organization they will add their picture and name plate to the line.

Each name plate has the members name and the year they joined the organization. As members retire from the active roster, their picture is removed from the members section and their name plate is retired to the alumni section where it is placed in alphabetical order among the others. All remaining members pictures and name plate are moved forward and the ranks are closed.

Constant updating of the plaque by moving the pieces to the correct places will allow all to accurately follow the membership history of our organization.

The plaque was unveiled at our 2004 Dinner Gala where we celebrated a reunion of all past members. Many past members returned to celebrate with us. It was a "Kodak Moment".
