The Englewood Social Club

 “The Beginning”

Formally organized fall of 1967 -

In the mid 1960, a group of distinguished gentlemen and close friends came together to create a local social club. These close friends lived in the same general area; two in upper Manhattan and six in Bergen County, New Jersey. The club idea became a reality when three of these men (John L. Greene,
Garvall Booker (Pictured Left) and Whittie English, Jr.) put pen to paper and drafted a constitution.  The document was typed by Whittie English, Jr. and presented to the group for adoption at a formal gathering in the fall of 1967. This gathering hosted Gravall Booker, Julius Brooker, Joseph M. Dargan, Charles P Dilworth, Whittie English, Jr., John L. Greene, Francis A. Hutchins (Pictured below), Eyre Saitch, George Sawyer, and Herman B. Smith. This began the Organization known as The Englewood Social Club.

The membership grew quickly, drawing members from the close friends of the core founding, group. The organization numbered 20 by the time of their first format event in the winter of 1969.

The membership in The Englewood Social Club is limited by it’s constitution to thirty members. The members formally gather monthly for dinner meetings hosted by a member at a location of his choosing. Each monthly dinner meeting provides a setting for relaxation and fellowship which the members consider an "Oasis". The camaraderie, the planning of social events, the adherence to parliamentary procedures, and sometimes the lack thereof, was therapeutic to the members.

Highlight of every year, beginning in 1969, is Our Annual Celebration and Dinner Dance. This event is the centerpiece of the Englewood Social Club's "Club Weekend".

This formal affair is graciously and gratuitously hosted by the members in January. The site of this event is carefully chosen to ensure the ambiance and elegance intended by our founders is celebrated as to produce a memorable and magnificent evening. Club Family and invited guests join us from around the Country.

Additional annual social activities of the club include a Summer Picnic in July and a Christmas Party in December. On each occasion the members invite friends to join the festivities. Several "Just Us" Parties are held during the year. Other social events which the club has held over the years are Dinner-Dance Boat Rides on the Hudson River, Sunday Brunches, Plays On and Off Broadway, Nights at the Races, Dinner Theater Parties in the Round, Trips to Atlantic City's and Foxwood Casinos, and a Bid Whist Card Party....... Lets not forget THE GOLF.
